A full class of calligraphers brought their practice calligraphy sheets and other attractive papers to make a book to keep documents or tickets in. Many participants added pages to make a journal or notebook. The number of books made was astounding.

For our November workshop Lyndell led us and showed us to how to treat paper in ways so we can use the paper for calligraphic backgrounds. She supplied jelly plates (centimetre high, A3 size block of gelatine) to use for printing. The surface is a lot more forgiving than a hard surface when using rollers. Here you can see a leaf print. The leaf is a delicate skeleton that had been stored between pages in a book for a many years. Love the effect! 
There were many other effects that could be created using paper and paints, it just depended on your imagination. Some great colours were created by dipping paper into tea solution, copper sulphate, weak black ink and caustic soda. This is a sample background produced: 
Using the above technique but following embossing this was achieved. Looks great but cannot be written on.
